Luzipho urged the IEC to "immediately disqualify" the IFP from the elections

Trade union federation Cosatu has called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to disqualify the IFP from contesting the general elections, the union's kwaZulu-Natal secretary Zet Luzipho said on Monday.

"No amount of intimidation by violence can be advanced in keeping the IFP on the roll," he said.

"We cannot allow any mercy to this matter by the IEC."

He said the opposition had contravened the Independent Electoral Act on Sunday in Zululand's Nongoma area when they allegedly attacked African National Congress members and disrupted their rally.

Three ruling party members were shot and injured
The ANC and the Inkatha Freedom Party were holding events a short distance away from each other at the time.

Three ruling party members, including a Zulu royal, were shot and injured while leaving the ANC rally and six others were assaulted when buses transporting ANC members to the rally were pelted with stones.

Luzipho urged the IEC to "immediately disqualify" the IFP from the elections because of "this contravention".

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi earlier denied claims that they were involved in the attacks, saying the police were to blame.

He alleged that SA Police Service members had "brutalised" them on the instruction of a high ranking ANC member.

'IFP supporters were summarily tear-gassed'
"IFP supporters were summarily tear-gassed and shot at with rubber bullets without provocation when they attempted to access their election campaign destination on foot."

Police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe denied the claim.

Luzipho said: "Cosatu in kwaZulu-Natal is disturbed to the extreme about the barbarism and warlordism displayed by the bloodthirsty IFP over this weekend in Nongoma. The IFP went all out to destabilise the peaceful rally of the ANC by unleashing a cold-blooded shooting of ANC leaders."

He said the opposition were out to "butcher the ANC".

"It was expected that the IFP leadership will not come out in condemnation, as they have not done so, because this has all the elements of the highly sanctioned order from above to butcher the ANC.

"The IFP can run but they cannot hide. The ANC is here and is going to win these elections." - Sapa

Dare we say, told you so, but yes,. this is a really sad headline to actually see making it to the front page,.. Cope's stepping to the stage in fact seems very much to be a side show that helps the IFP fall off the map,.. In fact, sorry who!?
And, yes, exactly,. the Zulu people,. an entire tribe,.. Thanks for coming, the exits are currently being sealed, your options are rather limited from this point. You will be lucky if you are not treated like Palestinians in a decade or so,..
