Trade union federation Cosatu has called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to disqualify the IFP from contesting the general elections, the union's kwaZulu-Natal secretary Zet Luzipho said on Monday.

"No amount of intimidation by violence can be advanced in keeping the IFP on the roll," he said.

"We cannot allow any mercy to this matter by the IEC."

Soweto hostel dwellers launch disruptive protest

Johannesburg metro police fired rubber bullets at Soweto hostel dwellers protesting on Saturday against a lack of service delivery.
"We had to use rubber bullets to get them off the roads," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
